Are you ready for some football!?!

Well the pre-season tap dance is just a fading memory.

Now, with both NCAA and NFL regular season schedules cranking up full throttle this week, it’s getting pretty exciting around here, especially since this is the first-ever football season for FootballPot.com.

Welcome back to our all gridiron heroes!

We’d also like to say “thank you!” to all our FP Hosts and Players who have already made our rookie year one to remember - even before the regular season begins. FP is adding dozens of new players and pots everyday and the feedback from our Hosts suggests that FP is going to be a very popular site for this rest of this year and beyond.

Example: One month ago we could count our daily hits on our fingers and toes. Now daily hits are in the hundreds, pushing the thousands. (Did somebody say, “You’ll never use paper again?!”)

We are stoked, pumped and revved! We can hardly wait to begin adding some kewl new features that we’ve had on the drawing board for awhile now. Watch this space; ’cause it won’t be long!

Meanwhile, if you see somebody hoggin’ up the photocopier with a 10×10 grid for the office pool, take them gently by the hand and ~ using your best penmanship and a nice, fresh new Sharpie ~ write “FootballPot.com” right across their palm!

Even bowling leagues play on football pots!

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Ha! Just when we thought we knew every possible way to use FootballPot.com, someone comes up with something new.

It turns out that bowling leagues are using FootballPot.com. They pit one team against another - or even just two individuals who have a particularly heated rivalry.

They even figured out how to run a pot at only 25¢ a square - by setting up the pot at 25 points per square and calling each point a penny. This results in a 2500 point pot, worth $25 - very affordable for a small club of players to run each week and cover some lucky winner(s) beer tab(s).

Lots of folks have used the “No Teams” option, which means that winning numbers apply regardless of team. That way there are two pot winners, even tho’ the only win period for a bowling game is the final score.

Even tho’ we created this free online squares game, it looks like we don’t know everything ~ but at least we’re willing to learn! ; )

Make a football pot into a baby pot

Monday, August 18th, 2008

If a branch of your family tree is expecting a new sprout soon, take the opportunity now to use FootballPot.com to run a baby pot and put together a nice gift for the family.

Instead of Home and Visitor scores, your numbers should be determined by the first decimal digit in the new baby’s length (in centimeters) and weight (in kilograms).

Using both the metric system and the first digit after the decimal point helps ensure that the winning numbers could be anything between 0 & 9.

You might also use a 50-50 system, which is common when you Host a pot for a charity cause. Basically, the Host’s Share is equal to 50% of the pot, and goes to the family. The other 50% goes to the winner(s) of the pot. So, if the squares are 1 point each, the Host’s Share is 50 and the winner(s) get 50.

You can also spread the love around by choosing the “No teams” rule so that the winning numbers apply both ways (length/weight AND weight/length). This results in two pot winners unless the winning numbers are the same or “tied”.

There may be no end of the ways you can use this free Web gaming application!

Cleaning out Granny’s attic

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Say you’ve got some collectable item you want to cash out of - or maybe you found something kewl in granny’s attic and she needs some beer money.

Instead of putting it on ebay and crossing your fingers for a good price, you can get top dollar by using Granny’s treasure as a prize awarded to the winner of a pot. Basically, you’re using FootballPot.com as a tool to hold a raffle.

Make each square worth 1% of the best price you want to get for it. So, if it’s worth $500, each square is $5 each.

This way:

  • You get the best possible price for the item.
  • The winner gets a helluva deal.
  • Everyone has some fun.

If you think it might take awhile to fill all the squares, don’t use a sporting event for the pot, since spots events take place on a certain date. Instead, do a stock market pot (like “NASDAQ vs. NYSE”) but explain to players that the event date is variable, like “effective on the Friday after the last square is sold.” This gives you as long as you need to fill all your squares.

This is a also a good way for a big family to find the most fair (and fun!) way to decide who gets Granny’s rocking chair when everybody wants it and there was nothing about it in the will.

If Granny’s chair should be given away - not sold - you need not assign any value to the squares ~ just let people play “for points only” and make sure everyone gets the same number of squares so everyone has an equal chance.

Hosts can control the numbers of squares a player claims by clearing any number of squares on an active pot. Basically, clearing claimed squares “unclaims” them so they again become available for play. Hosts must clear squares before the pot’s numbers are drawn.
