Cleaning out Granny’s attic

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

Say you’ve got some collectable item you want to cash out of - or maybe you found something kewl in granny’s attic and she needs some beer money.

Instead of putting it on ebay and crossing your fingers for a good price, you can get top dollar by using Granny’s treasure as a prize awarded to the winner of a pot. Basically, you’re using FootballPot.com as a tool to hold a raffle.

Make each square worth 1% of the best price you want to get for it. So, if it’s worth $500, each square is $5 each.

This way:

  • You get the best possible price for the item.
  • The winner gets a helluva deal.
  • Everyone has some fun.

If you think it might take awhile to fill all the squares, don’t use a sporting event for the pot, since spots events take place on a certain date. Instead, do a stock market pot (like “NASDAQ vs. NYSE”) but explain to players that the event date is variable, like “effective on the Friday after the last square is sold.” This gives you as long as you need to fill all your squares.

This is a also a good way for a big family to find the most fair (and fun!) way to decide who gets Granny’s rocking chair when everybody wants it and there was nothing about it in the will.

If Granny’s chair should be given away - not sold - you need not assign any value to the squares ~ just let people play “for points only” and make sure everyone gets the same number of squares so everyone has an equal chance.

Hosts can control the numbers of squares a player claims by clearing any number of squares on an active pot. Basically, clearing claimed squares “unclaims” them so they again become available for play. Hosts must clear squares before the pot’s numbers are drawn.
